ICC T20 World Cup 2024: USA Script History With Super Over Win Against Pakistan in Huge Upset
A tie-breaker was required to determine the winner at the Grand Prairie after both teams were tied at 159 runs each at the end of regulation play, as hosts USA came up trumps in the super-over by putting up 18 runs in the six deliveries before restricting Pakistan to 12 runs.
The United States of America registered a historic win over Pakistan at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas, Texas in their Group A ICC T20 World Cup 2024 encounter.
A super over was required to determine the winner of the game as both teams were tied at the end of regulation play as they both scored 159 runs each, and the hosts came up trumps in the tie-breaker as they made 18 runs in the six deliveries before restricting Pakistan to 12 runs.
The hosts limited Pakistan to a total of 159 runs for the loss of 7 wickets following a brilliant opening spell in which they scalped three wickets within the close of the first six overs.
Nosthush Kenjige starred for the hosts with a three-fer, while he was ably supported by Saurabh Netravalkar, who picked up a couple of wickets to further hamper the Green Stars.
Netravalkar struck early to dismiss Mohammad Rizwan before Kenjige scalped Usman Khan. Ali Khan got rid of Fakhar Zaman to spell danger for the tourists.
Skipper Babar Azam held his crease and stitched up a crucial partnership with Shadab Khan to stop a sequence of wickets as their 72-run stand saved face for Pakistan after they were reeling for 26/4.
The skipper added 44 runs at a slow pacer, while Khan chipped in with 40 runs to take Pakistan near the triple-digit mark after a nightmarish start.
Khan fell to Kenjige for the spinner’s second scalp of the day before the American bowler completed his three-wicket haul in the next delivery as he trapped Azam Khan for a golden duck.
Babar Azam fell to Jasdeep Singh and was joined in the dugout by Ifthikar Ahmed shortly after as the southpaw was scalped for 18. Shaheen Afridi’s big-hitting ensured that Pakistan would have a decent total to defend as his 23-run flurry off just 16 balls took his side to 159.
USA began their chase rather well with openers Monank Patel and Steven Taylor notched up 36 runs in the powerplay overs before the latter fell to Naseem Shah. Andries Gous took his teammate’s place at the crease and accompanied his skipper in a 68-run partnership for the second wicket.
Gous was castled by Haris Rauf for 35 runs before Monank went on to bring up his fifty in stunning fashion as he smashed Afridi for a couple of boundaries, a four and a six, in consecutive deliveries to take his team into triple figures.
However, he lost his wicket when he was caught behind by Rizwan off Amir before Aaron Jones could take crease. The star of USA’s first game picked up boundaries in regular intervals to keep his side in the hunt accompanied by Nitish Kumar.
But, a brilliant showing from Amir in the penultimate over brought the equation down to 16 off the final over. But, a six from Jones reduced the requisite and a four off the final ball by Nitish ensured that the teams would go the distance in Dallas as USA matched Pakistan’s score and a Super Over was needed to determine the winner!
