T20 World Cup debutants USA stunned 2009 winners and 2022 finalists Pakistan on Thursday with a super over win at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium, Dallas, to script one of the biggest upsets in not only the T20 World Cup but also ICC tournaments. Here’s a look at how the USA got the better of Pakistan and the other four biggest upsets in T20 World Cup History.

T20 World Cup 2024: USA Beat Pakistan in Super Over

A boundary off the final ball of USA’s run-chase had sent the match to a Super Over, and the co-hosts of the tournament came out on top in Dallas, pulling off one of the all-time great shocks. Pakistan have reached at least the semi-final stage in six of the eight men’s T20 World Cups, including finishing runners-up in the most recent tournament in Australia in 2022. But they came against a USA side who did everything right on the day to pull off one of the most significant results in the game’s history. Pakistan turned to Mohammad Amir in the Super Over, but three wides and a string of overthrows helped the USA rack up 18 runs despite just one boundary coming off Aaron Jones. And Netravalkar Saurabh held his nerve with the ball as the USA completed the most remarkable of victories on home soil.

Netherlands’ victory against England in the 2009 T20 World Cup opener was an eye-opener to everyone that no team can be taken lightly in the shortest format of the game. The Netherlands outplayed the hosts England in the last-ball thriller on 5 June 2009 at Lord’s. After England posted 162 riding on Luke Wrights’ 71 runs off 46 deliveries, the Netherlands kept themselves in the hunt courtesy of gritty knocks from Ryan Ten Doeschate and Peter Borren. It brought the equation down to seven off the final over to win, with Stuart Broad to bowl the final over. With two required off the final ball, Edgar Schiferli drugged out a block-hole delivery towards Broad, but the seamer, in a bid to get a run out at the non-strikers’ end, conceded an over-throw as the Netherlands managed two runs to script history.

T20 World Cup 2022: Namibia beat Sri Lanka

Namibia secured a 55-run win over Sri Lanka in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup opening match at Kardinia Park, Geelong. After big-hitting fireworks from Jan Frylinck (44) and JJ Smit (31 not out) helped Namibia post a competitive 163/7 in 20 overs, the bowlers produced a superb collective show, mixing their fuller and short lengths well to bowl out Sri Lanka for 108 in 19 overs for a historic win over a major cricketing nation.

T20 World Cup 2997: Zimbabwe Beat Australia

One of the favourites to win the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, Australia – the reigning 50-over World Cup winners, went down to Zimbabwe at Cape Town in their first-ever match of a T20 World Cup. Zimbabwe restricted the Ricky Ponting-led Australia to 138/9 before chasing it down in the final, riding on a young 21-year-old Brendan Taylor’s unbeaten 60-run knock.

  • Afghanistan scripted history when they defeated 2012 champions West Indies by six runs in their final group league encounter of the ICC World Twenty20. West Indies failed to reach a target of 124 as the Associate nation was able to restrict them to 117 for eight. Najibullah Zadrans, 40-ball-48, studded with four boundaries and a six, was the reason for them reaching a fighting total after being down at 56 for five. In reply, the Afghan bowlers maintained a disciplined line and length. It was heartening to see skipper Asghar Stanikzai toss up the ball to off-spinner Mohammed Nabi, with West Indies needing ten runs off the last over.
