However, the Congress managed to snatch Jorhat, a seat where Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma personally took charge of the BJP’s poll campaign. At this seat, Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi defeated sitting BJP MP Topon Kumar Gogoi.
Meanwhile, Narendra Modi emerged triumphant from the Varanasi seat for a third term with a victory margin of 1,52,513 votes. He defeated his nearest rival Congress’s Ajay Rai. As per the Election Commission, Narendra Modi won with 6,12,970 votes and Rai got 4,60,457 votes. The 73-year-old politician’s victory margin has been narrowed to 68 per cent. Narendra Modi was lagging behind the initial trend in the postal ballot count. Till 9:30 am, the counting showed him trailing to Rai. However, his vote margin increased as soon as the Electronic Voting Machines were opened in the next round.
Rai, however, is jubilant even after getting defeated and tells the Times of India that he has scored a “moral victory".
