Roti, or the traditional Indian flatbread, is a staple addition to many Indian meals. In different places, different types of flours are used to make them. In Rajasthan, bajre ki roti (pearl millet) is common, whereas in regions like Punjab, naan made of maida and other flour is preferred. In many parts of India, people simply cook from packed wheat flour. As people are becoming health conscious they are picking millet-based rotis that have fewer calories and high fiber content.
Recently, nutritionist Ruchita Batra shared a video about some of the best rotis for weight loss. In an Instagram video, she listed different types of rotis that come with low calories and a range of micronutrients. She starts the post by mentioning wheat roti, which is perhaps the most common roti in India. Batra writes that a wheat roti has approximately 70 to 80 calories. It is a good source of “B vitamins and minerals”.

Ragi roti (finger millet) has about 80 to 90 calories. Ragi is high in calcium, antioxidants, and dietary fibres. It is the best option for those who need nutrition for bone health. Next on the list is jowar roti (sorghum). A single jowar roti has just 50 to 60 calories. What makes jowar special is its low glycemic index. Ingredients that are low in glycemic index mean they do not raise one’s blood glucose levels. Additionally, jowar flour is gluten-free which makes it a perfect choice for those who are looking for gluten-free flour options. Needless to say, jowar is perfect for those who are looking to reduce or control their blood sugar level.
The multigrain roti comes packed with a broad nutrient profile. It offers an easy way to incorporate a wide variety of minerals and vitamins into one’s diet. Multigrain rotis have 80 to 100 calories. Amongst these options, the jowar appears to be the best for weight loss.
Other than the choice of flour, the process of making the roti also contributes to its calorie count. If one prepares roti with a generous load of ghee or oil then it will automatically gain more calories as opposed to rotis that are prepared with less or no fat. Overall millet flours are highly favourable for health and digestion.
