Players of the Uganda cricket team seem to be on cloud nine after securing their first-ever win in the T20 World Cup. This is the first time that the African nation has featured at a major ICC event.

Uganda failed to make a positive start to the debut T20 World Cup campaign, losing the opening group league fixture to Afghanistan. They bounced back well in the next game and beat Papua New Guinea in a low-scoring clash to register the maiden victory in the T20 World Cup. The Uganda unit celebrated the historic win with a groovy dance.

In a video posted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Instagram, Biran Masaba and his men were seen showcasing their favourite dance steps, with a peppy track playing in the background. The caption of the post read, “Groovy vibes from Uganda’s talented squad at T20 World Cup.”

The scenes were quite the same at the Providence Stadium in Guyana where the Group C fixture between Uganda and PNG was hosted on Thursday, June 6. After the match was over, players of the Uganda side came up on the sidelines and bowed down to the crowd to acknowledge their support. The cricketers also showed some traditional dance moves as the members of the coaching staff joined them in the celebration.

With the pitch in Guyana assisting the bowlers, Uganda managed to restrict Papua New Guinea to a mere total of 77 runs in the first innings. Four bowlers from the African squad claimed a two-wicket haul. Only three batters from PNG managed a two-digit score as they were bundled out in 19.1 overs.

Coming out to chase, Uganda also faced a batting collapse, losing five wickets at a score of 26. That’s when Riazat Ali Shah and Juma Miyagi stitched an inning-reviving 36-run partnership. Shah registered 33 off 56 balls while Miyagi contributed 13 runs to the scoresheet. After Shah was dismissed, Kenneth Waiswa did the remaining work and sailed Uganda across the line in the penultimate over.

Uganda will take on the West Indies in their upcoming group league game of the T20 World Cup on June 9.
