We often complain about not getting to watch something new and refreshing. Most of the web series these days are thrillers, crime dramas or maybe, romance. But Anushka Sen’s Dil Dosti Dilemma is not one of those regular shows. Based on Andaleeb Wajid’s young adult novel, Asmara’s Summer, the show revolves around a young girl who is sent to her grandparents’ house as a punishment by her parents over her trip to Canada. However, she decides to hide from her friends that she will not be vacationing in Canada, but will be spending time in Tibbri Road, a much more downscale area in Bengaluru.
Besides Anushka Sen, the seven-part series also stars Tanvi Azmi, Shishir Sharma, Kush Jotwani, Akshit Sukhija, Revathi Pillai and Elisha Mayor.
What works wonders for Dil Dosti Dilemma is its writing. The show is written very well by Anuradha Tiwari, Bugs Bhargava Krishna, Raghav Dutt and Manjiri Vijay. It’s dialogues have been written by Raghav Dutt. They have been able to successfully present several layers of Asmara (Anushka Sen)’s life. Dil Dosti Dilemma has elements of emotion, rebellion, comedy, friendship, and family bonding in it. All of these together, make the show heartwarming and a delight to watch.
Anushka Sen rules the show with her acting prowess. She has played her part of being a ‘rich brat’ brilliantly. In the first episode, I hated Anushka’s character. She has been portrayed as somebody who is intolerant of poverty and is ill-manner towards middle-class or poor people. In one of the scenes, she introduced her Nani (grandmother) to her friends as her Nani’s friend. Why? Because she isn’t wealthy and wasn’t dressed as per her standards. The scene makes you feel sad yet angry at the same time. You might end up hating Anushka but I feel, that’s the power of good acting. She plays her role very convincingly and perfectly.
Anushka’s best friends in the show, Pillai and Mayor are also fun to watch. They looked promising at what they did. Kush Jotwani is charming. He comes across as somebody who is humble and delivers his dialogues in a very well-defined way. His love-and-hate relationship with Anushka is also impressive. Would definitely love to watch more of him on screen.
Veterans Tanvi Azmi and Shishir Sharma have played their respective parts brilliantly. Some of the best scenes in the show are those between Tanvi and Anushka. Their conversations are fun to watch. While Tanvi is an experienced woman who knows how to act as per society, Anushka is rebellious in nature. Needless to say, it is the chemistry between Tanvi and Anushka which adds an extra layer of entertainment to the show.
However, too many sub-plots also take away the essence of the show a little. While I was waiting to watch more of Asmara and her life in Tibbri Road, the love angle with Kush Jotwani tends to digress the audience from the main plot. Also, the makers have not specified the age of these characters. We know that Asmara is a teenager and a school girl but as far as Kush’s character is concerned, we aren’t aware of his age. He handles his own business and looks way older than Asmara.
Besides this, the sub-plot of Revathi Pillai’s brother and Elisha Mayor’s parents in the show have also not been explored properly. Maybe, the makers could have avoided both these sub-plots to focus on Asmara and her road to self-discovery.
