Anurag Kashyap and Gulshan Devaiah have teamed up for Disney+ Hotstar’s new Indian series ‘Bad Cop’. The show was officially announced today, May 31, along with an intriguing teaser video.
In the teaser, Anurag Kashyap’s character Kazbe is introduced as a powerful goon who exerts control over others. He is depicted making a man sing The ABC Song for children in a mocking manner in front of his associates. Upon noticing someone outside, Kazbe challenges the man to come up with a word starting with the letter K, indicating his desire to assert his dominance by hearing his own name. Following this, Gulshan Devaiah’s police inspector character, Karan, enters the scene and begins pursuing Kazbe. The teaser also suggests the possibility of Devaiah playing a dual role in the series, promising an exciting twist in the storyline.
The teaser description on YouTube humorously states, “‘K’ for ‘Kazbe’ (scoundrel). ‘K’ for ‘Kamina’ (rascal). ‘K’ for ‘Coming Soon’,” setting the tone for the upcoming series. In an Instagram post unveiling the ‘Bad Cop’ teaser, Anurag wrote in Hindi, ”क से कज़बे. क से कमीना. क से कमिंग सून!Hotstar Specials: #BadCop Coming Soon! (sic)”.
According to a report in Variety, Anurag Kashyap shared, “I have created a lot of characters that are gory, quirky, dark and many more things but believe it or not it was difficult for me to be one. Kazbe is someone who doesn’t think too much before doing anything, he just does it. He is a dreadful, eccentric, nefarious and a quintessential villain. I had to bite into the intricacies of this character and make it my own.”
Gulshan Devaiah mentioned that the action scenes were challenging for him, especially the running sequences, as he isn’t accustomed to doing action and is not physically built for it. Nonetheless, he expressed his enjoyment working with Anurag, finding it fun to shoot scenes and action sequences with him.
“I was familiar with Aditya Datt’s style since I had worked with him before. He is very straightforward and wants to make an entertaining, cool show that people will enjoy. The action was a bit tough, particularly the running, which challenged me because I’m not used to doing action and I’m not physically built for it. Overall, it was fun working with Fremantle India and Disney+ Hotstar. Moreover, it was enjoyable to perform with Anurag, who had only directed and produced my films earlier, but it was fun to do scenes and action with him. I never expected to be acting with him,” he noted.
This upcoming series is an adaptation of RTL’s German show ‘Bad Cop: Kriminell Gut’ from 2017. The Indian version’s script is penned by Rensil D’Silva and directed by Aditya Datt, known for ‘Crakk’. In the series, Anurag will portray the character Kazbe, the villain, while Gulshan Devaiah takes on the role of Karan, an intense cop determined to apprehend Kazbe. The cast also includes Harleen Sethi, Saurabh Sachdeva, and Aishwarya Sushmita in key roles.
