Many organisations are making various efforts to protect government schools in Karnataka. In a new scheme, Rs 500 is being deposited by the alumni association on behalf of the children who will be admitted to Class 1 of Devarabhupura Government Kannada Senior Primary School in Lingasugur taluk of Raichur district in the year 2024-25. Distribution of school bags to children of Class 1 is also underway.
In a programme attended by the old students at the premises of the Government Model Primary School in Devarabhupura village in Lingasugur taluk, innovative plans have been made for the survival of the government Kannada school. The initial enthusiasm for Devarabhupur Government Kannada School, established in the 70s has decreased following the enrolment of children which has been declining in recent times.
The enrollment of children in the school has significantly declined in the last few years due to a lack of teachers and infrastructure in the higher primary level from Class 1 to Class 8. On the other hand, the children are not coming to classes even after enrolling.
To survive the decline of the government school, the former students of this school have formed an association called “Hale Beru Hosa Chigi” and are coming up with various educational programmes to attract the children back to school and increase the enrollment rate. In this regard, a free bag was distributed to the children who were enrolled in the first class today and a deposit of Rs 500 was deposited in the name of each child.
From now on, many projects are planned including organising a training workshop for the students of the village government primary school, preparing for the school’s Smart Class, and setting up a digital library and a well-equipped playground. Therefore, the old students are working hard for the development of the school with the help of donors. In parallel, efforts have been made to increase the enrollment from the first class. On the occasion of World Environment Day, saplings were planted on the school premises.
“This time, 6 children were admitted on the day of school opening. Making a deposit is just a small effort. The children come to our school and appreciate the educational programme that is being conducted within a year with the facilities available to us,” said the alumni association.
The number of children is expected to increase as Ms. Rupa, the headmistress and all the teachers of the school are conducting an enrollment drive. “Many people have come forward to get admitted in different classes and the number of children will cross 40 this week,” he said.
