Giving a major boost to urban transport in Pune, Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. (PITCMRL) announced on Saturday the arrival of the first train set for the upcoming Metro Line 3 corridor.
The project, undertaken by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), is completely made in India, developed, and built at the Alstom facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh. Reports suggest that the train has arrived at the Maan depot of Pune Metro Line 3.
Meanwhile, the Pune Metro Line III is a 23-kilometre elevated metro rail project that connects Hinjewadi’s IT hub with Shivajinagar’s central business area. Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd. has contracted Alstom for 22 train sets for the 23-km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar stretch. Each train set consists of three cars with a total carrying capacity of 1,000 passengers and is designed to transform urban mobility in Pune.
The PML 3 project is a joint effort by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Tata Group under the Public-Private Partnership model. In addition to that, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) awarded the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project to a consortium that includes Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (TUTPL) and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH.
Chief Executive Officer of Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd., Alok Kapoor, said, “The trains sourced for Pune Metro Line 3 are equipped with cutting-edge technology like the regenerative braking and third rail system. These trains are designed to provide a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly mode of transport,” reported Punekar News.
“The PML 3 trains are a testament to our dedication and will have an operational speed of 85 km/h, smoothly connecting Hinjewadi’s IT hub with Shivajinagar’s central business district. The Tata Group’s policy is to never compromise on quality and safety in all phases of the project, undertaken for the convenience of the citizens.”

While speaking to the Times of India, PMRDA Commissioner Rahul Mahiwal said that work is on track while PMRDA Chief Engineer Rinaj Pathan stated that after the first set, the remaining set will be dispatched in the next 6-8 months wherein 22 trains are to be dispatched.
