Viral video shows how a Kanpur man arranged 'band baja' to welcome his divorced daughter back home.

In a refreshing departure from the norm, a man from Kanpur chose to celebrate his daughter’s return after her divorce with the same joyous fervour typically reserved for sending off a bride to her new home. Anil Kumar, a BSNL employee, welcomed his daughter Urvi, 36, an engineer at Palam Airport in New Delhi, with a lively band and music, emphasising a fresh start and a proud return home.

“We brought her back just like we had sent her off after her wedding. We want her to begin afresh with her chin up” remarked Anil Kumar. Urvi had married a computer engineer in 2016 and lived in Delhi, where they had a daughter. However, allegations arose that Urvi’s in-laws were mistreating her for dowry, leading her to seek a divorce, which was granted by the court on February 28. “I tried hard to save the relationship after enduring eight years of torture, beatings, and taunts, but in the end, it broke down.”

Moved by his daughter’s plight and inspired by the desire to change societal perceptions, Anil organised a jubilant homecoming for Urvi, complete with music and festivities. “While bringing her back home, I made arrangements for ‘band baaja’ so that a positive message would be sent to the society and people would try and understand their daughters rather than ignore them after marriage,” he highlighted.

The heartwarming scene, captured on video and widely shared on social media, depicts Urvi participating in customary rituals before the lively beats of dhols fill the neighbourhood.

Reflecting on the occasion, Urvi’s mother, Kusumlata, expressed, “I look forward to being with my daughter and granddaughter. And it is a great feeling.”

Even neighbours were initially puzzled, thinking Urvi was getting married again, but they soon realised the true intention behind the celebration. Urvi, deeply moved by her parents’ gesture, expressed her gratitude and mentioned that she would take some time off before embarking on a fresh chapter in her life.
