Kalpana Gandharv crooned 'Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye' for Sanjay Leela Bhansali's series Heeramandi.

Kalpana Gandharv, a young and influential Bollywood playback singer and songwriter, has once again showcased her versatile voice and impressive singing skills in the latest rendition of ‘Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye’ featured in the newly launched Netflix drama series, Heeramandi. This song adds another triumph to Kalpana’s diverse musical accomplishments.

‘Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye’ evokes a range of emotions among its listeners, seamlessly blending into Heeramandi’s narrative. Kalpana recorded the song 1.5 years ago, landing the opportunity through a tip from a friend of her brother, Prithvi Gandharv, allowing her to contribute to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s project. This collaboration between her and renowned music director Shreyas Puranik is a testament to her talent.

Kalpana Gandharv’s musical prowess has been evident long before her hit in Heeramandi. She is the voice behind the popular song ‘Old School Girl’ from ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns,’ showcasing her versatility across various genres. Kalpana also gained acclaim with her performance in ‘Tunglak’ from the Oscar-nominated film ‘Sarbjit” (2016) and ‘Haneya’ from the Zee5 web series film ‘Bombay Talkies.’ Notably, she also sang ‘Babula’ from the critically acclaimed short film SHE. Speaking exclusively with News18 Showsha, Kalpana Gandharv shared her experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and her stellar music journey.

Here are the excerpts:

Congratulations on the success of ‘Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye’ ! Could you share with us what it’s like to see this song come to life in Heeramandi?

It was an absolute dream come true for me. Meeting him left me clueless at first, not knowing what to expect. In a moment where I was caught off guard, he heard me singing, and the joy on his face was evident. His happiness upon hearing my voice was a delightful experience for me. Subsequently, after a session that lasted around 45 minutes, he asked me to perform a particular song. He provided me with the lyrics and the music, initiating a duet. As I began harmonizing and singing, I realized the potential of the song and the project. Despite some hesitations, I decided to sing the duet because I didn’t want to miss out on such a valuable opportunity. Knowing that this collaboration could lead to a significant project, especially considering it involved Sanjay sir, made the experience all the more valuable and exciting. This encounter epitomized the essence of seizing and creating opportunities in the industry.

How do you perceive the role of music in storytelling, as brought together in ‘Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye: from Heeramandi?

The abundance of roles is directly correlated to the deep emotional connection that occurs between listeners and musicians through storytelling. This connection plays a significant role in the impact of music. When songs become hits, they have a ripple effect, benefitting not only the music industry but also extending to the world of movies. The success of movies likewise benefits actors. Music’s influence is profound, and I am currently witnessing its powerful effects, which fills me with immense joy.

What was it like working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on ‘Ek Baar Dekh Lijiye’?

I shared some truly memorable moments from the recording session, which left a lasting impression on me. It was an incredibly memorable and fascinating experience. Let me elaborate on this. Initially, our meeting in the office, followed by when we met at the studio where they performed. The session extended for quite a while, spanning about 7 to 8 hours, showcasing his unwavering dedication. He meticulously honed in on every detail, ensuring the intricacies of the melody he had composed were perfected. The composition he crafted was exceptionally beautiful, captivating me due to his directorial-like approach. In my perspective, he stands as an unparalleled figure, incredibly expressive like the sun – you simply can’t say anything to him. Yet, he excels not only as a musician but also as a music director. This particular song resonated with me deeply, reminiscent of the timeless classics composed by Madan Mohan Saab. I feel fortunate and appreciative to have had the opportunity to sing this song, as it holds immense significance for me. Furthermore, the fact that Sanjay Leela Bhansali sir and Mr. Turaz collaborated on this song makes this moment even more significant.

What are your thoughts on the picturisation of the song? How does it compliment your voice?

I was deeply moved by the beauty of what they presented with their heartfelt portrayal of love. The early release of the audio added to the amazement of the experience. The unique blend of Indian programming, resembling a ghazal version, is truly remarkable. While the audio had already been unveiled, witnessing it in Heeramandi added an extra layer of beauty for me. The simplicity of having only guitars accompanying my voice created a connection with 900 people, making the arrangement stand out. Everything about it was exceptional, and I was genuinely impressed. Words cannot fully express how overjoyed I am with the outcome.

You’ve been part of several high-profile projects like Tanu Weds Manu Returns, Sarbjit, and Bombay Talkies. Can you describe how each of these projects has influenced your musical journey?

My musical journey has been progressing exceptionally well. When I sang my first song, I was completely unaware. I simply followed Krsna Solo sir’s guidance and was asked to sing. Reflecting on my life, I believe that the biggest struggles have been met with God’s grace. My family has been incredibly supportive, enabling me to pursue my dreams. It all began there and it wasn’t an effortless journey from that point forward. I encountered various challenges, especially because the song was in English. This particular song is quite remarkable and holds special significance for me. It was a stroke of luck to be part of Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Part one was already a major success, and singing for part two felt like a significant milestone, almost like my debut. The reception was overwhelmingly positive, which was immensely gratifying. Following that, my journey continued with new experiences. Now, with this latest song, I sense that recognition is on the horizon. This song is bringing me not just recognition, but also a sense of acceptance and appreciation.

Can you tell us more about your early training in Hindustani classical music and how it has shaped your singing career?

The foundation of my musical journey lies in the environment I grew up in. Today, various elements have converged, stemming from our rich musical family legacy. I am now the fifth generation in my family immersed in music. At home, my parents have been my initial mentors, followed by my brother, a noted Bollywood singer from whom I gained valuable insights. Drawing inspiration from my gurus – my grandfather, granduncle, and the entire musical family – I began my musical education. Living in a musical household can sometimes make you overlook the significance, taking it for granted. Additionally, I delved into classical music from the Agra Gharana under the tutelage of Ritu Chaurasi. I also honed my skills in ghazals under the guidance of my granduncle. Over the years, my journey has been characterized by continuous practice, singing, and a deep-rooted passion for music.

Your brother, Prithvi Gandharv, is an award-winning singer and composer. How has he inspired and guided you in your career?

He has been an inspiration to me. Ever since childhood, he has been that kind of supportive brother. I feel truly fortunate to have him as an elder brother because he provides unwavering support. He not only offers guidance but also sets an example for how certain things should be done. In every situation, he is there to offer advice and guide me. While Mom and Dad are present, his role is equally vital in my life.

You’ve mentioned taking inspiration from legends like Lata Mangeshkar, Noor Jehan, and Mariah Carey. How have these artists influenced your music?

My special place at home is where my love for all kinds of music blossoms. Since childhood, I have immersed myself in the melodies of legends like Lata Mangeshkar Ji and embraced the soulful tunes of ghazals, along with the vibrant compositions of Asha Bhosle Ji and others. I find sheer joy in singing across various genres. Unexpectedly, a particular favorite of mine became Seven Days. Each song and genre held a significant place in my heart, enriching my musical journey. Although I have always found singing diverse songs to be challenging, I questioned why I struggled with it. Realizing that mastering one genre could lead to conquering others, this realization has shaped me into the confident artist I am today. This transformation has instilled in me the belief that I can tackle any genre with prowess and passion.

Could you talk about some of your most memorable collaborations with industry giants like Sanjay Leela Bhansali and other music composers and their creative processes?

Each individual possesses a unique style. When encountering different composers, one has the opportunity to absorb various lessons and insights. Regarding my experience working with accomplished individuals, I must emphasize the invaluable learning process. We acquire techniques, delve into emotions, and explore every aspect of music-making. In my collaboration with Sanjay sir, I must acknowledge his unparalleled mastery in the field. His approach is truly distinctive, filled with intricacies that he meticulously shares with me, explaining each movement, feeling, and execution in a profoundly special way. This interaction has not only enriched my musical journey but has also sparked a transformation within me, encouraging further learning and growth. Their lifetime of experience serves as a wellspring of wisdom from which I have greatly benefited. It has been a transformative experience.

Your voice has also been popular in marketing jingles for brands like Britannia and Cadbury. What do you enjoy most about singing jingles?

It’s intriguing how things have shifted. Nowadays, fewer people opt for theaters since almost everyone has a TV at home. While some individuals still visit theaters, the experience at home with jingles and movies creates a distinct environment. It’s like entering a whole new world. Personally, I find that my voice resonates the most when I perform in people’s homes, touching their hearts in a way that often goes unnoticed. Engaging with others and sharing love and emotions becomes significant in this context. When it comes to jingles, there is also a unique sound aspect involved. I enjoy exploring the intricacies of jingles, experimenting with different sounds and tones to create engaging tunes. This experimental approach adds a fun element to the process, enriching the overall experience. The essence lies in the experimentation and the creativity that is embedded in each jingle creation.

What new musical styles or projects are you looking forward to exploring in the future?

Venturing into Bollywood is something I aspire to, and I’ve already recorded some tracks. Soon, these tracks will be heard by the audience. I’m hopeful that they will be well-received and that people will enjoy the music. The tracks encompass a variety of genres, including R&B, unique club mixes, and a diverse range of songs. This eclectic mix is intriguing because it showcases different styles, which may surprise the listeners. Personally, I find joy in singing a wide range of songs across various genres.

You have an incredible ability to transition between genres, from Bollywood hits to traditional Sufi Qawwalis and Ghazals. What drives this versatility?

When it comes to Western music, I find it very soothing. Certain songs, like the ones you mentioned that help in shaping a career, along with the renowned artists, known for their legendary techniques which are unmatched, create a remarkable impact. Transitioning to commercial work often requires delving into Bollywood music, which indeed involves a lot of effort. While I haven’t formally studied Western music, I’ve been exposed to it, and to me, the essence lies in the meticulous preparation needed to deliver a movie song effectively. This holds significant importance, particularly when considering the intricate skills often found in classical music. Understanding the importance of a strong base and having knowledge of raagas plays a crucial role. However, delving into classical music can feel like navigating a vast ocean, challenging to reach the depths. Despite the challenges, persisting in the pursuit of mastering it is essential, even if it takes multiple lifetimes. Accepting the process, allowing creativity to flow, and aiming for success are pivotal. This journey, although demanding, can be a rewarding conquest, akin to overcoming obstacles with the power of determination. My roots in a highly musical family have deeply influenced me, instilling a profound love for music. Moving forward, to succeed in commercial endeavors, a diverse set of skills must be honed. Hence, my dedication to exploring various genres of music and my passion for singing across different styles continue to drive me forward.

Will you be working on creating a catalogue of independent songs apart from Bollywood music?

I’m thrilled about the progress in my music journey. Many songs are currently in the works and will soon be released to the public. Some of these songs have been both written and composed by me, reflecting my artistic expression, awaiting to be enjoyed by listeners. I find it empowering that artists, whether Indian or from any background, are not limited to any specific platform. In today’s era dominated by platforms such as Spotify and various other audio platforms, artists have a wide array of avenues to share their music and artistic creations. This ability to connect with audiences through different platforms is truly remarkable and adds a wonderful dimension to the artistic process.

In the age of social media, how do you use these platforms to reach out to music lovers?

Throughout my journey thus far, my primary focus has been on my work, particularly on refining my musical abilities. I haven’t been preoccupied with creating content solely for the purpose of going viral; that wasn’t my intent. Thankfully, my music has organically reached a broad audience, and I’ve never sought viral fame. It’s just not who I am. While the competition in the music industry is fierce, it’s essential to offer proof of your capabilities without succumbing to unnecessary pressure. I firmly believe in approaching work with unwavering dedication and giving it my all — a full 100% effort. How about you? Do you aim to distinguish yourself from the crowd by excelling in your endeavors? By consistently delivering excellence, you’ll naturally capture people’s attention. This is the level of dedication I’m committed to maintaining. Currently, social media serves as a potent platform, albeit one peppered with stiff competition. Embracing healthy competition is essential, right? It’s about thriving amidst challenges rather than letting them overwhelm you. On my end, I focus on releasing my music and letting the audience decide without getting bogged down by unnecessary stress. I don’t let stress affect me because I stand by my work and believe in my craft. This confidence stems from knowing what I do and how to refine it, leaving the rest in the hands of a higher power.

Do you feel songs like ‘Ek Baat Dekh Lijiye’ can inspire Gen-Zs to develop a taste for genres like Ghazals?

Reflecting on the recent past, it feels like quite a while since I encountered a truly brilliant question. During this time, my mind and heart have been drawn towards the profound messages conveyed through serene songs. I have found solace in tunes that exude peace, both in recent times and in the past. It’s a source of joy, right? But why does it resonate so deeply? Indeed, this fusion and rediscovery of these songs are profoundly enriching. If our current musical landscape subtly transitions towards ghazals and veers into the realm of soulful music, it truly is a remarkable direction. As we continue to evolve, artists like Sanjay Leela Bhansali Sir and others have ventured into creating albums in this realm. Moreover, if they so choose, they can seamlessly blend their artistry into commercial ventures. People, often embrace what touches their hearts with love, fostering motivation and inspiration. When a particular song resonates with the audience, delving further into the realm of ghazals offers hope for continued exploration and discovery. Just like the icons like Begum Akhtar and the enchanting voice of Madhurani, this exploration breathes new life into the music scene. This resurgence is a beautiful experience, marking a departure from fading trends and a return to significance. For artists who find solace in classical music or are classical vocalists, the embodiment of melodious tunes is indeed a blessing. Above all else, it’s important to acknowledge that music has the remarkable ability to bring peace and serenity. It serves as a calming influence amidst life’s turbulence, resonating profoundly on a global scale. Undoubtedly, music has the extraordinary power to establish spiritual connections, serving as a form of profound dialogue that unites people in a shared experience.

When it comes to Indian composers, what’s your wish list looks like?

I have a strong desire to collaborate with several prominent figures in the industry. I would love to work with Vishal Bhardwaj, Vishal-Shekhar, Salim-Sulaiman, Rahman Sir, and also Vishal Mishra. These individuals are not only accomplished but also great friends, and I am eager to collaborate with each of them. Musicians like Ajay-Atul stand out for their distinct styles of work. Additionally, there are numerous composers who hold a special place in my heart. Music, to me, is a truly unique and special form of expression.

Do you have any advice for aspiring singers who look up to you and want to make a mark in the music industry?

I would advise aspiring individuals to maintain resilience and never lose heart in their journey. Persevere and dedicate yourself to becoming the best artist you envision. Take the time to listen to a diverse range of artists, particularly those whose music deeply resonates with you. If there’s a specific artist you admire, delve deeper into their body of work to select the best pieces. Immerse yourself in their style and strive to master it. By continuously honing your craft, your skills will inevitably improve, and the outcomes will reflect your dedication. Recognizing the impact of your efforts is a clear sign that you’re on the right path.
