By following these guidelines, you can kick the heat and stay safe during the hottest days.

Summers make more than half of the population under heat alerts. According to a report, there have been 16,344 suspected heat stroke cases in the country since 1st March, with 486 cases reported on 22nd May alone. In such a situation, prevention can help safeguard from the deadly impact. Dr Saumya Shatakshi, Senior Wellness Consultant, Healthians shares some tips to stay cool and safe in this extreme weather.

  1. Stay timely hydratedAvoid tea/coffee, alcohol and other carbonated drinks. Drinking plenty of fluids is important even at times when you don’t feel thirsty, as humidity refrains the ability to release the body’s internal heat. Also, to determine your hydration level, watch out for urine color where transparent and pale yellow is ideal while dark color is not.
  2. Smart Cooling PracticesAfter coming indoors, avoid refrigerated water; go for earthen pot water instead. Drinking chilled water immediately after being in the heat can create a sudden body temperature imbalance. Earthen pot water provides appropriate coolness and safe hydration.
  3. Dress AccordinglyChoose light-colored and breathable fabrics to help maintain body temperature. Tight and dark-colored clothes block airflow, making you feel suffocated and uncomfortable.
  4. Nutrition and ReplenishmentReplenish lost nutrients and minerals by consuming coconut water, fruit juice, lemonade, and electrolyte-rich foods. Always have Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) with you. If not ORS, mix a pinch of pink salt & sugar(if required) with half a glass of water to prepare homemade electrolyte when dehydrated.
  5. Stay under ShelterStay under shaded areas when outside to protect yourself from direct sun exposure. Use umbrellas, hats, or wet cloths to shield yourself from the heat. These measures help prevent overheating and heat-related illnesses.
  6. Safety in VehiclesAvoid staying longer in the car, especially with children, elderly people, and pets. If unavoidable, ventilate the car using an air conditioner and park the car in shaded areas.
  7. Measure for people on medicationMedicines like diuretics and other causes an increase in sweating and the risk of dehydration. Hence, Hydration plays a key role in such situations. If you are someone with ongoing medication, it’s always best to contact your doctor and follow their advice.

By following these guidelines, you can kick the heat and stay safe during the hottest days. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. In case of any persistent health issues, contact or visit the doctor immediately.
