There are easy steps you can take to maintain healthy eye pressure and protect your vision besides following your doctor’s advice.

Dr. Suneeta Dubey, Medical Director, Director Glaucoma Services & Quality, Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital and Orbis Volunteer Faculty shares tips to keep eye pressure in check

High eye pressure can gradually damage the optic nerve, the pathway that transmits visual information from the eye to the brain. This damage can eventually lead to vision loss and even blindness. Fortunately, there are easy steps you can take to maintain healthy eye pressure and protect your vision besides following your doctor’s advice.

  1. Have a Balanced DietEating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides essential vitamins and minerals that nourish the eyes. Studies suggest that antioxidants, particularly vitamins C, E, and A, may protect against eye diseases.
  2. Exercise: A mustRegular physical activity promotes overall health and may also help in maintaining eye pressure within limits. To begin with, aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise three to four times a week. Those with pre-existing conditions should consult their doctor before starting any new exercise program.
  3. Weight ManagementObesity is a known risk factor for several health conditions, including hypertension and glaucoma, a disease often associated with high eye pressure. Maintaining a healthy weight can significantly reduce the strain on your circulatory system, including the blood vessels in your eyes.
  4. Consume Caffeine in ModerationWhile research on the link between caffeine and eye pressure is ongoing, some studies suggest a temporary increase in pressure after consuming caffeinated beverages. Therefore, it is best to limit your caffeine intake.
  5. Keep an Eye on Your HydrationStaying adequately hydrated is essential for overall health, including your eyes. Dehydration can sometimes lead to fluctuations in eye pressure. Therefore, prioritize drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
  6. Schedule Regular Eye ExamsEarly detection is critical to managing high eye pressure and preventing vision loss. Regular eye exams, even in the absence of any noticeable symptoms, are crucial for monitoring eye health. This is particularly crucial for the elderly. During a comprehensive eye exam, your doctor will measure your eye pressure, examine the optic nerve for signs of damage, and assess your overall eye health.

Maintaining healthy eye pressure is an essential part of protecting your vision. By incorporating simple lifestyle changes like consuming a balanced diet, indulging in regular exercise and weight management initiatives, moderating caffeine intake, and prioritizing regular eye exams, you can significantly reduce your risk of vision complications. Remember, early detection and intervention are critical in preventing irreversible damage. Don’t wait for a vision problem to occur; take your eye health seriously. Act today to safeguard your sight for the future.
