Durga Puja, also known as Durgotsava, is one of the biggest festivals in West Bengal. It is celebrated annually in September-October as per the Gregorian calendar. It is a ten-day festival, of which the last five are the most significant. This year, it will officially begin on October 9 and will end on October 13. Even though there are four months to spare before this festival, the preparation for the Durga Puja has already started in West Bengal. Amid this, an artist from Balurghat who makes decorative materials for the idol of Durga will be exporting his creations to California, adding an achievement for the West Bengal decorative artists. The decoration of the Durga idol made by the famous artist Debjyoti Mohra of South Dinajpur district will cross California within a few days.
Apart from the idol construction, Durga Puja is also about mandap decoration and the ornaments of goodness durga. This year, the idol’s decoration and other materials are going to be transported from Balurghat to distant California. A variety of ornaments are being made, including neck-chick, seven-wave necklaces, bangles, knots, and crowns. Goddess Durga idols in California will be donned in the jewellery made by artist Debjyoti Mohra.
Balurghat artist Devjyoti is reportedly making jewellery for goddess Durga day and night. Serving as a testament to hard work and dedication, many other artists are inspired to give their best in making decorative materials for the Durga Puja.
Artist Debjyoti Mohra said that the number of decorative artists in Balurghat and South Dinajpur districts is relatively less. So, he decided to pursue this line of work and will be doing the same in the future. This time, Durga’s dress which he weaved will be exported to California. He said that on the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja and Kali Puja, the craft of a different artistic talent will be presented to the public.
